I’m in the midst of an 8 week full body cleanse, which has been both challenging and rewarding in equal parts! Some of the hardest parts have been simple things like cutting caffeine, and scary things like having an amalgam filling replaced! But overall, the radiance and vitality that has come with the detoxification has made it easy to stick with and follow through with my full plan of detoxification.
There are some amazing supplements available to support the detoxification functions of the body – many of which I am using! But, being a nutritionist, I always look first to how we can provide what our body needs through food. So I wanted to share with you some of my favourite detoxifying foods.
Let food be thy medicine – Hippocrates
Lemons support the liver, kidneys and lymphatics – it’s a no brainer. Add it to your water, your herbal teas and squeeze it over your salad and seafood.
One of my favourite liver-loving foods, beetroot ensures the toxins you are mobilizing are excreted from the body. Eat freshly grated into a salad, or pop it into your smoothie.
Asparagus supports the drainage function of the liver. Added bonus – its highly anti-inflammatory and can also protect against cancer! Steam it or throw it on the BBQ.
Previously avoided due to its high fat content … we now know fat is far from the enemy we once believed it to be. Avo’s are high in fibre and anti-oxidants, and will keep you satisfied and your energy stable. Enjoy with salad or over some Paleo toast.
Brocolli is particularly supporting of phase II detoxification – the process through which the liver turns toxins into water soluble substances that can then be excreted from the body.
And speaking of water – an important part of any detox, adequate hydration supports lymphatic flow and is crucial for the flushing of toxins from your body. Increase slowly if you’re not used to drinking a lot of water, so your kidneys can get acclimatised.
