Does this sound familiar? “At your age there’s nothing we can do about your Arthritis”. You might have had someone say this to you or to someone you know.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. There’s options for treatment including gait training, massage, acupuncture and Trigenics® that can help reduce the pain caused by Arthritis and get you moving again.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by the breakdown of the cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones, where they meet to form joints. Unstable or misaligned use of the joints cause the cartilage to breakdown due to the bones rubbing against each other. This causes stiffness, pain and loss of movement in the joint.
The tracking of the joints is encouraged by the most common patterns we use in our daily lives such as how we sit, crouch, walk or jump; the layer of cartilage works to absorbs shock and allows the bones to glide easily against one another as they move.
Our sedentary lifestyles driven by technology and limited time outdoors, can create muscle imbalances, asymmetry and malalignment which in turn causes the bones to tilt into each other. This causes rubbing and irritating the joint overall and then osteoarthritis.
It makes sense that to reduce the pain that results from these biomechanical issues, we need to change them by balancing the muscles, creating symmetry and correcting alignment.
Multiple studies (including Alnahdi 2012 &Loureiro 2013) found that participants with OA, especially hip and knee, had significant muscle weakness and imbalances that affected physical function compared to their age-control counterparts.
The muscles, tendons and ligaments move the bones by contracting, as well as cushioning the movement and absorbing impact. When the muscles that are weak try work with stronger counter muscles, the movements are distorted. The same effect happens when tight muscles are working against loose muscles.
If you feel stiff, sore or unmotivated to step out and enjoy life –let us help you change that!
Treatment can start today. We look at how the whole body works through a gait and activity analysis, as each person is unique. Once we know where the imbalances and compensations are that are causing the unhappy joints, we can balance the weak and tight muscles.
We can also create new movement habits to produce a smoother glide and a stronger, more stable and healthier joint which eases joint pain, jamming and dramatically slows the progression of the body’s cartilage breakdown.
We then guide you through proper technique for your choice of activity, a program to get the muscles even and working together, as well as manual treatment such as massage to get the joints happy and balanced.
Exercising helps reduce blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose levels, boosts immunity, while lowering the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. However, your technique determines if you are helping your body or hurting it.
When we have balanced, stable joints where the muscles are working together, symptoms of Arthritis such as pain and stiffness can be reduced.
Don’t let it stop you from the living the life you enjoy or have an impact on your levels of activity, emotional health and mood.
