The Benefits of Regular Sports Massage

Successful athletes know that Sports Massage is essential part of recovery and injury prevention. A normal athlete’s cycle is that they need to be able to train, compete and recover. Which means athletes are often permanently geared to be active and don’t have enough relaxing/recovery time – the prolonged recovery stage tends to be missed.

The lining of our muscles is meant to be smooth and relaxed but when a certain group of muscles get tight and stressed, the lining is no longer smooth but knotted and ridged. Which creates what most people know as knots or trigger points.

Contracted trigger points in muscle fibres stop blood flow and start starving the tissue of oxygen and nutrients. Waste and toxins start to build up causing pain, muscle tension or spasms in the muscles.

When this starts happening, it’s incredibly beneficial to get the muscles loosened off and released. This is particularly important for people who are exercising and training regularly or have an upcoming event, as heavily exercised muscles may also lose their capacity to relax. This causes chronically tight muscles, and loss of flexibility.

We all know someone (it could be ourselves!) who trains really hard, doesn’t stretch enough and who tends to get injured often who could really benefit from regular sports massage!

Sports massage benefits include:

  • Reducing muscle tension
  • Reducing muscle soreness and helps prevent DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness)
  • Reducing muscle spasm
  • Improving circulation (helping to prevent lactic acid build up)
  • Breaking down scar tissue and adhesions
  • Increasing muscle flexibility
  • Increased sense of well being

These all help shorten recovery time, decrease fatigue and increase oxygen supply to the muscles. Muscular flexibility is important for athletes as it will increase their range of movement and decrease the chance of injury. A Sports Massage therapist will be able to manipulate and release a lot more than a foam roller or a lacrosse ball can do, using a range of different techniques.

The term “athlete” can be misinterpreted – you don’t need to be a professional or competing to need and benefit from sports massage!
